The First Train to Greenport – July 27, 1844

.      In March, the Southampton History Museum, joining with the Railroad Museum of Long Island, will recognize two significant milestones in the history of Long Island.  190 years ago, on April 24, 1832, the Long Island Rail Road was granted its Charter.  180 years ago, on Saturday, July 27, 1844 the first LIRR train completed its journey across the Mainline from Brooklyn to Greenport.

.      To celebrate these milestones, beginning March 5, 2024, the Southampton History Museum will exhibit items and memorabilia from their collections and those of the Railroad Museum.  To open the exhibit, Railroad Museum President, Don Fisher will give a talk about the history of the LIRR and its “First Train to Greenport.”  The presentation will take place at 6:30 PM on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the historic grounds of the History Museum, 17 Meetinghouse Lane, Southampton, NY.  Admission is free but registration is required as space is limited.   Please RSVP – Click HERE
