Our Thirtieth Anniversary – POSPONED!
. The Thirtieth Season of the Railroad Museum of Long Island is postponed indefinitely due to the COVIC-19 health emergency!
. In April 1990, a small group of rail preservationists gathered at Greenport to hold the first meeting of a fledgling Museum to celebrate the rich history of railroading on Long Island. Over thirty years have past and that bantam organization has grown to close to three hundred members, (with more than one hundred and fifty of them actively volunteering throughout the year), owning its own buildings and land, holding a collection of twenty-two railcars and rail related vehicles significant to New York and Long Island rail history, an outstanding collection of images, paper and artifacts held at our archives and library at Riverhead and on exhibit at Greenport, six operating model rail layouts in G, O, HO, N and Z scale – including the “Historic Lionel Layout” transported in 2009 from the Lionel factory at Chesterfield, Michigan!
. In this, our thirtieth year, we proudly announce the Railroad Museum of Long Island being recognized for excellence by the New York State Board of Regents with the appointment of a New York State Absolute Charter on February 11, 2020! As the Museum’s President, I thank each and every member and volunteer that has worked so hard over the past thirty years to bring our Museum to this level. I look forward to the many years ahead, as we continue to grow, as we maintain and build our collections and share them with the people of Long Island, New York, the Country and the World!
. To our readers and visitors, we thank you! Your support and interest in the Railroad Museum of Long Island makes all of our time and hard work worthwhile. We love to see your smiles and the wonder on your faces as you learn something new at the Museum. We look forward to seeing each of you when it is safe to do so during 2020!
THANK YOU!
Don Fisher, President
