The Railroad Museum of Long Island holds collections of rail equipment, art, paper, photographs, toy trains and historic buildings and structures at two locations on the North Fork of Long Island.

The RMLI “Museum” is housed in the LIRR Greenport Freight House at 440 – 4th Street, on the west edge of the “Historic Greenport Transportation District.”  Here we have a large space where we hold permanent and rotating exhibits of Long Island railroading, past and present, and host an HO Scale layout depicting Greenport in the mid 1950’s westward to Riverhead in the 2000’s.  On display outside the building is a caboose, boxcar and LIRR vee-snowplow.

The RMLI “Restoration Site and Visitors Center” is located in Riverhead, New York, at the junction of the North and South Forks of Long Island.  Riverhead is the Seat of Suffolk County government and due to its geographic and political importance has a splendid, LIRR Passenger Station built of brick in 1910 and a large rail yard and numerous sidings leading to businesses dealing primarily in agricultural and construction trades.

Fifteen of the Museum’s collection of eighteen pieces of rail equipment reside here at 416 Griffing Avenue. The maintenance and care of our collection is centered at our backshop on the west side of Griffing Avenue.  East of Griffing Avenue we have the “Freeman North Exhibit Hall”  that is home to the “Historic Lionel Layout” and our wood shop and the historic two-story “Corwin and Vail Lumber Co.” office that holds our Archive Library, Museum gift shop, the “Manorville Chamber of Commerce Layout” and our handicap accessible restrooms.

On these pages you will find information related to these sites and our collections.  Browse these pages and then plan to visit the many wonders of the RMLI in person!
