End of February Work Week Adventures

RMLI’s volunteer carpenters, “The Shipwrights,” have continued to make strides with BEDT #16’s cab trim, windows and doors. By the end of the day Tuesday, both doors had a first coat of red paint, the locomotive’s rear windows had been constructed, Lexan installed and wood primed. The steam engine’s front window frames had been constructed and layout work on the sliding side windows was underway.

The Port Jefferson Public Library is hosting a RMLI exhibit for the month of March at the Library, 100 Thompson Street, Port Jefferson Village. The exhibit, titled “Long Island, Focus on Freight,” celebrates the history of Long Island Railroad freight service. Numerous artifacts from the RMLI collection are on display in the Library lobby. A talk by RMLI President, Don Fisher will be given on Thursday, March 8 in the large meeting hall at 7:00 PM. The subject will be an overview of the Engine #39 restoration project. In January, RMLI member, LIRR Historian and retired LIRR Branch Manager Mr. Dave Morrison gave a presentation about the LIRR’s historic railroad stations. Hosting the exhibit and talks are all part of the Library’s Living Heritage Project. Search http://www.portjefflibrary.org/herprog.html for more information.
